Carter Thiero

Carter Thiero

Carter Thiero is the first son of Check Oumar and Vana Thiero. Born in 1996, Carter learned to write, sing and perform stunts before he learned to speak. “Blue Clues” was new on PBS and Carter was often seen with his “handy dandy note book” spelling out words in crayon. Though at age 2 he spoke many individual words he was not able to put a sentence together. Assessments regarding his speech delay found him diagnosed with autism. Weekly speech therapy helped Carter communicate in sentences although he still exhibited echolalia and jargon. Fortunately, his speech delay did not halt his excitement when performing musical numbers he watched on television.

Always a bright and jolly youngster Carter grew up physically active and creative. His early creations were large paper animals that quickly became coveted gifts of friends, teachers and relatives. As he grew Carter advanced to drawing comic strips. All the while he was constantly imitating film and television characters who captured his fancy. He laughed like James Colburn in “Snow Dogs,” captured the southern drawl of Raven Symone’s country cousins in “That So Raven,” and imitated the cadence of Eddie Murphy in “Beverly Hills Cop” & “Coming to America.” It was clear, after he played a supporting role in “David & Goliath” at In His Presence Church that Carter had the talent for acting as well.
When his parents divorced, Carter became the man of the house and matured rapidly. He was charged with watching his younger brother from time to time, a job he assumed quite seriously. He saved the money he earned babysitting to buy clothes, a cell phone and to make donations to charity organizations. Because Bakary, Carter’s brother, was also diagnosed with autism (yet is non-verbal) Carter has developed incredible empathy for those who are less advantaged. Bakary looks up to Carter and has sometimes imitated his Big Bro. The brothers are close.

Carter’s ability to understand the struggles of others as well as their hopes helped him develop insightful characters in the stories he began to tell and later write when he became a high school student. He began by verbally re-writing his favorite films, giving new character names to roles that would be played by himself and his friends. He often drew pictures of his cast. He’d draw the marquee. He even wrote character breakdowns. Eventually he started typing the stories. He became more and more excited every time he completed a paragraph and saw his fresh new story evolve in print.

Currently a senior in high school Carter has applied to Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) to major as a Screenwriter. He will start full-time, fall 2015.
